THE LEATHER AGE

When industrial strength enters the fashion system.

Fashion & Luxury Ecosystems · International Positioning · Cultural Diplomacy

Türkiye was already one of the world’s major leather manufacturing countries.

The challenge was different:

how could that industrial strength also communicate the depth of craftsmanship, technical know-how, creativity and culture behind it?

In Istanbul, TACTICA encountered The Leather Age, an extraordinary project created by Turkish designer Hatice Gökçe around the ancient civilizations of Anatolia.

Sixteen costumes and twelve accessories used leather to connect history, identity and contemporary design while demonstrating the extraordinary range of techniques and expertise behind the material.

TACTICA saw something bigger than an exhibition.

We saw a positioning platform.

1. The opportunity was already there

TACTICA was already working with ITKIB to build connections between Türkiye and the Italian fashion ecosystem through what we called a DUAL approach: relationships and collaborations moving in both directions through institutions, industry, designers, experts and media.

During an Istanbul programme organised and accompanied by TACTICA, we brought together figures including Ermanno Scervino, Jane Reeve, then CEO of Camera Nazionale della Moda Italiana, Fulvia Bacchi of Lineapelle/UNIC and leading Italian media.

Beyond the formal programme, the experience created something equally valuable:

relationships, personal trust and a shared understanding between the two ecosystems.

It was in this context that we encountered Hatice Gökçe's The Leather Age.

The project already contained the story we were looking for.

2. Change the context. Change the meaning.

The opportunity was not to reinvent the exhibition.

It was to change the context in which it would be seen.

TACTICA helped build the institutional relationship between the Turkish Leather Council and Camera Nazionale della Moda Italiana.

The result was The Leather Age entering Milano Moda Donna, presented under the patronage of Camera Nazionale della Moda Italiana and within its official Fashion Week calendar.

From Istanbul to Milan.
From industry to fashion.
From capability to expression.

3. 26 September 2015. Palazzo Serbelloni, Milan.

Milan was not simply another destination for the exhibition.

The context itself became part of the positioning.

Palazzo Serbelloni, Milano Moda Donna, Camera Moda's institutional support and an audience drawn from the international fashion system gave an existing project an entirely different platform.

The exhibition could now speak simultaneously about Türkiye, leather, heritage, craftsmanship, technical expertise and contemporary design.

4. The exhibition became the strategy

The Leather Age drew on eight civilizations that had inhabited Anatolia.

Across 16 costumes and 12 accessories, Hatice Gökçe transformed leather through dramatically different constructions, surfaces, volumes and techniques. The historical references provided the narrative; the pieces themselves demonstrated what Turkish leather craftsmanship could achieve.

The exhibition connected ancestral know-how with contemporary creative expression.

Heritage was not presented as nostalgia.

It became evidence of capability.

5. Bringing the fashion system into the room

The objective was not simply attendance.

It was to place Turkish leather inside the professional and cultural conversation surrounding international fashion.

Institutions, designers, editors, industry figures and media encountered the material through something they could experience directly.

Not a claim about craftsmanship.

The craftsmanship itself.

Not a claim about creativity.

The work itself.

The audience became part of the positioning.

6. When positioning becomes editorial

The institutional strategy created relevance.

The exhibition gave the media a story.

And that story travelled across international fashion media, newspapers, business publications and specialist titles.

The coverage did more than report that an exhibition had taken place during Milan Fashion Week.

It amplified the territory the project was designed to establish: research, craftsmanship, quality, technical know-how, innovation, creativity and the evolving meaning of Made in Turkey.

The positioning had become editorial content.

7. What changed

Türkiye did not become a leather manufacturing power because of The Leather Age.

It already was one.

The opportunity was to expand what that industrial strength could mean.

From:

production · manufacturing · supply

to:

know-how · craftsmanship · heritage · innovation · design · creative capability

The product had not changed.

The perception could.

What this proves

The Leather Age shows TACTICA operating at the intersection of industry positioning, institutional relationships, culture, fashion and international communications.

The exhibition already existed.

TACTICA recognised its international potential, connected the relevant ecosystems and helped create the context in which its meaning could expand.

An industrial story became a cultural story.

A cultural story demonstrated technical capability.

And that capability entered the international fashion conversation.

The material was leather.

The opportunity was perception.
